Long distance relationships: the importance of frequent visits

Among the difficulties of a long distance relationship is the loss of physical intimacy. Emails may fill in the details of a partner's day, but they aren't always emotional or romantic.
Cards and letters may be more intimate, but they're not the same as having a real flesh and blood partner in your arms. Telephone calls may provide comfort from hearing a loved one's voice in real time, but they can also remind us of the distance that lies between the receivers. The only thing that seems to overcome the loneliness and isolation of a long distance relationship is a true physical reunion.

But how helpful are these visits, and do frequent visits really help a long distance relationship grow? Many couples separated for military or business reasons would say that few things replace the feeling of a visit from their loved one. The relationship was already strong when the separation took place, and finding a way to reconnect physically can take away many of the stressors separation often creates. Those who have anxieties over their partners' well-being are usually comforted by the opportunity to be with them in person. Things can be shared which remained unspoken in other forms of communication.

For healthy couples facing a temporary separation, frequent visits can be a very healthy way to maintain their relationship while circumstances keep them physically apart.
But not all long distance relationships are strengthened through frequent visits. Sometimes there are financial concerns which can cause friction- a plane ticket may be prohibitively expensive or the visits may cause a partner to lose valuable vacation benefits or wages. Others may fear that the visits are being prompted by irrational fears of infidelity or bouts of separation anxiety. A balance must be struck between the benefits of being with a separated loved one and the real life costs of those visits.

One important thing to keep in mind when considering the frequency of visits is the nature of the separation. If a husband or wife is called away to perform a specific duty for a company or the military, he or she may not feel comfortable with frequent visitors, no matter what the relationship may be. Sometimes the best thing to do is wait until a critical task has been accomplished before planning a visit. Celebrating a successful mission may be more beneficial than nervously awaiting the results of a test. Occasionally, some people may need some time away from their partners in order to focus more of their attention on the task at hand. The sooner they complete their assignment, the sooner they may return home. In this case, visits should be kept to a minimum until he or she feels comfortable with the company.

Some long distance relationships can indeed benefit from more frequent visits. Those serving sentences in prisons may look forward to weekly visits from their significant others. The visit itself may be the best part of their week and they would feel worse without it. Prisoners often feel tremendous guilt for putting their romantic partners in such difficult circumstances, so frequent visits can help assure them the situation is only temporary. College students living away from home can also benefit from frequent visits. Instead of just talking about 'the girl back home', a student can bring her to the campus and involve her in his new lifestyle. Girls facing separation from their hometown boyfriends may look forward to the occasional date. College students away from their significant others may not know how to handle the temptation of meeting attractive people in classes or other campus events. If the romantic bond between partners is strengthened by frequent visits, then it's much easier to deal with the pressure to explore other relationships.

The key word is 'frequency'. If the relationship is already strong and the conditions which caused the separation are indeed temporary, then there's little harm in a fairly frequent visitation schedule. After all, the separation period will eventually end and the relationship will no long be considered long distance. But some relationships may not be strong enough to support frequent visits. Sometimes couples meet under circumstances that are meant to be temporary, such as a convention or out-of-town business meeting. They may strike up a pleasant conversation about their mutual interests, which leads to a feeling of emotional connection. They may feel compelled to exchange phone numbers or addresses in order to maintain this sudden personal connection.

The problem arises when he lives in Boston and she lives in New York City. As promising as this chance encounter may have seemed, it may not be enough to pursue a substantial long distance relationship. Instead of taking expensive and lengthy train rides from Boston to New York City every weekend, it might be best to continue a truly long distance friendship for a while. Frequent trips to pursue a casual relationship may lead to obsessive feelings or painful misunderstandings. Allowing the relationship to grow naturally may be the healthier way to go with a new long distance relationship.

Ideas for surprise wedding proposals

When two people have been together for quite some time, questions about marriage and proposals start popping up from every corner. Parents and friends have begun to badger you about when you are planning on proposing. Maybe your partner has even started asking if the relationship will be taken to the next level anytime soon. Sure, you can grab your partner and start looking at rings together which would unofficially mark your engagement, but what fun is that? If you want to surprise your partner with a wedding proposal they will talk about for years to come, here are some ideas that might inspire you.

If you suddenly take your honey out for a weekend getaway to an exotic location, she may figure out that something marital is amiss. This is why you want to aim for total and complete unexpectedness. Maybe you order out pizza and watch movies on Friday nights. Offer to pick up the movies alone. Get some wedding-inspired movies that she loves like “Steel Magnolias” or “Betsy’s Wedding.” Hide the ring box in the pizza box. When you get home, pop the first movie in and set the pizza down in front of you. When she sees which movie you have picked, she will be wondering why you picked it. For a slightly comedic touch, get down on your knee and open the pizza box as if it were the ring box.

Maybe you and your girlfriend love to see new movie releases. Speak to the theater manager beforehand and find out how much it would be to rent one of the slides from the slide show that usually comes on before the feature presentation. Seeing what the reason is for, they may even let you do it for free. With the help of the theater staff, come up with a design for the slide that will get the point across. Maybe you can have the slide read, “Sarah, will you marry me?” If you want to get a little more creative, have the sign read something like, “Sarah Goodman, report to the concession stand immediately.” You can be by the concession stand ready to propose.

One romantic way to propose to your girlfriend is to send her on a scavenger hunt. Naturally, she might sense something is going on if you send her on a random scavenger hunt in the middle of the year, so try to schedule it on an important holiday like Valentine’s Day, your anniversary day or her birthday. This way, she will think the scavenger hunt has nothing to do with a possible proposal. The final clue will send her to you (pick a romantic destination like the site of your first date, a favorite restaurant or a special spot in a park) where you will be waiting ready to propose.

If your girlfriend has a group of good friends where she works, get them in on the fun. Have her manager or boss call a group meeting that she must attend with the rest of her colleagues. The meeting can begin as most do with talks of new projects or the statuses of old projects. Once the meeting has truly become boring, the manager or boss can open up a Power Point presentation. One of the slides within should be a proposal from you to her. When she reads it and looks utterly confused, walk in and propose to her.

The Guy's Guide to Breakup

It's a myth that guys are any better at handling a breakup. They're just better at hiding it from the public. You're fine during the day, getting the job done at work, meeting pals for drinks, barely giving your ex even a passing thought - until you find yourself at the bottom of a bottle of tequila, calling her up at ridiculous hours and muttering incoherent pleas to work things out.
Sound familiar? Here's how to take your next breakup like a man.

Cut Ties
Cease all contact with the offending female immediately. Erase her number from your phone, block her email address. Steer clear of any "our" spots; find a new bar, gym and brunch spot if you have to. Return her stuff, take down the photos, and remove all signs of her from your home and office. You need to send a message - both to her and to yourself - that you're moving on from the life you had together. Besides, do you really need your next girlfriend to find your ex's stuff still in your closet?

Just Say No
She may insist that you still be friends. You will decline that invitation. She had her chance to be with you, right? Your friendship - like your killer backrubs and delicious morning-after pancakes - is one more thing she won't get to enjoy after the breakup. You can reconsider in a few months, but for now, just say no.

Put the Bottle Down
There are more productive ways to move on than drowning your sorrows in booze - ways that won't make it more tempting to all her at 3 a.m., ways that won't make you puffy and weepy. Ways that won't get you arrested for assault after you mistakenly think you can "totally take that guy." Get out of the house (and the bar) at least a few times a week. Join a gym, head to the movies or...

Call a Girl
Your female friends are much more interested in hearing you vent about the breakup. They'll give you lots of attention and perhaps even some good advice. And they'll look really hot next to you when you're walking around town, which never hurts. Who knows? Maybe one of them will introduce you to your next new girlfriend.

The key to making Mum feel special this Mother's Day is to create a day where she will feel appreciated. After all the things she has done for you, she deserves it.

2--Ensure that as a son or daughter and husband that all the household chores, - such as the cleaning, hovering, dusting and washing are done for the week, to give her a much needed break 3--Get your children to paint and decorate a large earthenware trough. I then lacquered over it with yacht varnish, filled it with compost and planted it with lots of spring flowering bulbs, such as daffodils - to spell out MUM. It's unique and it's a gift that keeps on giving, every year.
4--Book a mother and daughter spa day. Not only will she love the relaxation and pampering but it will give you some quality 'together' time in between all those wonderful luxuriant treatments. Guaranteed to evoke many happy memories and blissful sighs.
5--If Mum is a budding artist or would like to perfect her cooking skills, how about an art lesson or cookery course. This gives her encouragement and shows that you do listen to what she says. 6--Bake a cake - shows time, effort and love whatever your age.
7--Book a family meal out or cook Sunday lunch and tell Mum to put her feet up - maybe give her a DVD of her choice to help her with the feet up part!
8--A necklace or other piece of jewellery will come as a complete surprise and will be a present just for her, please note Dad's, that an iron does not qualify as a gift for her!
9--A west end show is a gift that will last past Mother's Day. If you want to find a less expensive alternative, check your local theatre or amateur dramatics for their next show.
10--Plan an afternoon out, a walk in a park or along the coast with a stop for a cup of tea or coffee is a good day out for everyone that doesn't have to cost a fortune. If it is a mild day - pack a picnic.

Finally don't forget to tell her how much she means to you and how happy you are that she is your Mother.

How to Throw an Unforgettable Kids Birthday Party

Kids take their birthdays very seriously, and are extremely disappointed if their birthday parties are anything short of spectacular. Throwing an unforgettable kids birthday party can sometimes seem like a task better suited for a professional event planner. But with the proper party supplies, a little know how and a lot of imagination, you can throw a birthday party that the kids will be talking about all year.

Before you let your inner party planner take over, make sure that throughout the process you consult with the birthday boy or girl, unless of course the party is a surprise. Kids have their own ideas of what makes a party fun, and if the kids don’t have a good time the party is a bust. Discuss possible theme ideas, party games, food, and favors with them to ensure everything is kid friendly. If you are planning a surprise party you can ask siblings or friends for ideas and opinions.

Theme Party Ideas
A successful kids birthday party starts off with a great theme. There are many great party themes you can choose from, everything from your child’s favorite toy to their favorite movie genre. The possibilities are endless and a good theme can really help pull your entire party together.

Some possible themes include:
- Western (complete with cowboy hats)
- Princess (tiaras for all the girls)
- Cartoon characters
- Disney
- Carnival (clowns and plenty of games)
- Toys (Bratz, Barbie, Hot Wheels, etc)

Once you have your theme chosen, planning out a kids birthday party becomes much easier. Try and get everything from the decorations to the food to tie into the theme. For instance, if you are throwing a Western theme party get cowboy birthday banners and serve up barbequed burgers, chili, and hot dogs. As party favors you can give each little guests their own cowboy or cowgirl hat to wear. Make sure the birthday boy or girl’s hat is extra special.

Fun and Games
Games are an important part of any kids birthday party. Games should be fun and get everyone involved. Offering some small prizes to the winner of each game is also a great idea for the kids. Have a variety of games, some that require the kids to get active and some that requires them to use their heads. This will give everyone an opportunity to win a prize.

Some fun kid’s games include:
- Musical chairs
- Pin the tail on the donkey (this can be tied into your party theme, for example if your theme is Disney you could have pin the ears on the mouse)
- Relay races (you can get really creative with this one and get the kids to do everything from run a course with a balloon stuck between their legs to three legged races)
- Memory games (show the kids a selection of items and see who can remember the most once you have taken them away)

Favors are one of the highlights for children at a birthday party. They love getting little gifts of their own to take home with them. You don’t need to get too extravagant when it comes to party favors. Try and get some favors to go along with your theme. If you are having a princess theme give the girls tiaras as they arrive and a bag full of beauty items. Hairbrushes, hair clips, nail polish, and lip gloss are all fun and inexpensive ideas. More general favor ideas include pencil and eraser sets, notepads, and candies.

Food for Thought
Party food is a key component to any great birthday party. Depending on how long the party is, you’ll probably want to offer a lunch or dinner as well as snack and treats throughout the day. Most kids don’t have discriminating tastes so you don’t need to go overboard with a gourmet meal. Simple is usually better when it comes to kids.
Keep your snacks standard. Candy, chips, and pop will suffice, there is no need to add any fancy appetizers to the mix since they will probably get ignored. However, adding a veggie and fruit plate is a good idea since even kids can get sick of the sweet stuff. Be sure to have plenty of beverages on hand, and to save your sanity try and avoid caffeinated pops. Juice and water should be on hand as well. You can also make a fun colorful fruit punch for the kids to enjoy.
As for food, stick with simple dishes such as pizza, burgers, and hotdogs. These items are simple to prepare (or order) and will be a hit with the kids. Before planning your menu check to see if any of the children have food allergies or special dietary needs. Most parents whose kids have serious allergies such as peanuts will probably let you know as soon as the invitation is accepted. However, if you’ve got a little vegetarian in the group the last thing you want to do is serve them a hamburger or hotdog.
The birthday cake is the piece de resistance of the party. Everyone loves to see what type of delightful cake will be presented and how many candles the birthday boy or girl can blow out. If your baking skills consists of adding eggs and water to a package mix, fear not. While a package cake will still be a hit with the kids, there are plenty of cake shops and bakeries that can create any cake you desire. For instance, if you’re going with a baseball sports theme, you can get a delicious cake of any type shaped like a baseball. The kids will love it, and it saves you time and frustration as well. Make sure you know the birthday boy or girl’s favorite flavor before you order.
While planning a birthday party can be a difficult and time consuming task, all the work will be worth it when you see how much fun all the kids have. Birthday parties are monumental occasion for kids, and the more special you can make it the better.
